Nko Kumo...Dalaso or Dalasi

It is reported that, the Gambian currency Dalasi was suggested by a Fula elder at a gathering. When they say, what should we name the Gambian currency, he said, "this is after independence and it is a time of hard work and sel-relaince, I suggest Dalaso" (sewing of wresler's custume)Dala or wreslers pants use to be hand made by local village girls. It involve meticulous time consuming effort, because each wresler wear a distinct custume. However, the word Daa is important, which means to make, Laa is layer. does the word actually means, making a layer for wreslers? I wonder.Dalaso became Dalasi

Interesting! The word "dalasi" had been in use for the former currency (2 shillings=1 dalasi) even before the dalasi was used as the Gambian official currency in 1971.
The following were the local names of the British West African currency as far as I remember:
    1 penny was “Burey” (W,M,F)
    3 pence was “Nyata” (W,M,F)
    6 pence was “Nonkong” (M)
    1 shilling was “Taransu” (M,W,F)
    2 shillings was “Tala”(M), “Talalibarr”(W)
2 shillings was “Dalasi”(M), "Daerem" (W), "Mbudu goto"

Another source has it this way:
Dalasi ( Mandinka) Daala (Mouth)Si (Full enough) Da-lasi (Enough mouth ful), derived from the understanding that Dalasi is highest amount of Gambian currency denomination.

Butut (Wollof) Bu Tuti (meaning the small one) derived from the understanding that Butut represents the smallest donomination of Gambian currency. Thus we have Dalasi and Butut. Please note that the plural form of Dalasi is Dalasi and not Dalasis.

In business transactions, 100 Bututs is legal tender that qualifies for business exchange. It is the maximum a trader is bound to accept in the sale of good and services. With understanding though, this amount may exceed to a point acceptable to the seller. Cases of conflict over the issue of legal tender are not common in Gambia. Business goes along the line of social values rather than legal obligations. Lot of things are taken for granted
